(Fass, Abkürzung: bbl) Traditionelles Maß aus der Frühzeit der Ölindustrie, als Öl - auch Rohöl - ausschließlich in Fässern transportiert wurde. Das Barrel ist ein Hohlmaß und entspricht 42 US-Gallonen oder rund 159 Litern. Es hat auch heute nicht nur im anglo-amerikanischen Sprachraum, sondern für das gesamte internationale Ölgeschäft eine große Bedeutung. So werden Förderstatistiken in Barrel-Einheiten veröffentlicht, und die Preisfestlegung für fast alle gängigen Rohölsorten erfolgt in Dollar je Barrel. Annäherungswerte für die Umrechnung von Barrel in Kubikmeter bzw. Tonnen gibt die folgende Tabelle wieder: in Barrel Barrel/Tag metr.Tonne Tonne/Jahr Kubikmeter von multipliziere mit Barrel (bbl) 1 - 0,136 - 0,159 Barrel/Tag (bbl/d) - 1 - 50 - metr. Tonne (t) 7,33 - 1 - 1,16 Tonne/Jahr (t/a) - 0,020 - 1 - Kubikmeter (m3) 6,29 - 0,863 - 1 Anmerkung: Annäherungswerte aufgrund durchschnittlicher Dichte. Die Abkürzung bbl steht für "blue barrel", ein blau gekennzeichnetes Fass mit genormtem Inhalt.
