Smog ist eine Zusammensetzung aus den englischen Wörtern ?smoke? (Rauch) und ?fog? (Dunst, Nebel). Smog ist eine Mischung aus natürlichem Nebel, Rauch und Abgasen und ist deswegen umwelt- und gesundheitsgefährdend. Neuerdings unterscheidet man zwischen ?Wintersmog? und ?Sommersmog?. Wintersmog entsteht bei winterlichen Inversionswetterlagen und bewirkt eine sichtbare Verunreinigung der Luft über städtischen und industriellen Ballungsräumen. Daneben gibt es auch noch den sogenannten Sommersmog oder ?Los-Angeles-Smog?, bei dem an sommerlichen Schönwetterlagen aus den Auspuffabgasen der Autos Ozon gebildet wird. Sommersmog ist aber nicht nur auf die Ballungsräume begrenzt, sondern tritt großräumig auf.
